The Slippery Slope: Frameless Showers and Water

Frameless showers look beautiful when they are installed! They can open up a bathroom and make it look bigger and feel more open. The problem comes into play when curbs or other flat surfaces are not slopped properly.

The frames of traditional showers helped to keep the water in the shower. Frameless showers don’t have a frame like a traditional shower, so the slope of all of the surfaces become much more critical. When designing and installing a frameless shower, all flat surfaces need to slope into the shower. This includes knee walls, seats, shelves, and curbs. We typically see one shower per week that is constructed improperly. Specifically, the flat surfaces need to slope at least 1/16” to 1/8” into the shower. Consequences of not implementing such a slope can be dire, resulting in mold, mildew, and water leakage issues. As an example of this please take a look at the following pictures.

You can see here that the level in the picture is level. To correct issues like this you will need to get your contractor back on-site to relay the tile. This needs to be completed before a frameless shower can be installed.

In the picture below you can see that the slope of the knee wall has been corrected and bubble in the level is on the left side. This shows that any water that would land on the knee wall would drain into the shower.

20 Foot Tall Glass Wall Installment

CARROLLTON, Tex. – On July 14, 2015, Glass Doctor® of North Texas announced that it successfully designed and installed a freestanding 20 foot tall curtain wall window system for a million dollar house in the Lakewood neighborhood, one of Dallas’ most affluent suburbs. Usually Glass Doctor installs standard windows into the framed openings of the house structure, but in this case, there was no framed opening so Glass Doctor had to build a 20 foot tall structural window.

Mitch Lambert, Glass Doctor Account Manager, said, “This was a great opportunity for Glass Doctor of North Texas to showcase what sets us apart from our competitors.” And Kelly Reynolds, Owner of Keen Homes, said “[We chose Glass Doctor because of] their reputation, quality, and competitive price.”

This beautiful house has already been sold for well over $1 million. Keen Homes is a custom builder that specializes in modern, residential homes. They sell finished homes and homes being built, which you can find on their website here.

How do you feel about your front door? You know, the door with the large window right in the middle. Sure it’s pretty and ornate, but there just really isn’t a whole lot of privacy with that big open space. Doug Dotson: I recently had a call from a customer who was concerned with the lack of privacy with her front door window. When the customer called, she actually had a sheet hanging over the door to cover the window. Tired of the sheet look, she asked what her options were. I suggested replacing the entire window altogether with tempered etched glue-chip with a low-e exterior lite glass. Not only was the customer happy with her new window, but she was also thrilled to put the sheet away for good. The new window provided the privacy she desperately wanted and it also gave her an added bonus of an updated look that enhanced her curb appeal.
