5 Reasons you Should Square Dance

Yep, you read that right. There’s actually a month designated to celebrate a little dosey doe. Who knew?

So, you may be thinking this has absolutely nothing to do with you. And that’s totally realistic. You don’t exactly see very many square-dancing songs on MTV these days. Although, it would be fun to watch a square-dance act sweep Dancing with the Stars. Just saying.

Think about it for a minute. Have you ever seen a square dancer frowning? Square dancers are always smiling! Even if square dancing isn’t your cup of tea, you have to admit these folks do look like they are having a pretty good time.

So, maybe square dancers are on to something. Seriously, who couldn’t use another reason to smile? But there has to be more to it than that. It’s very doubtful that there’s this magical, smile-inducing force field that overtakes folks when they step onto the dance floor.

Because your Glass Doctor® specialists care about you, we’ve decided to dig into this a bit more. Did you know that there are actually health benefits to square dancing? We’ve come up with 5 reasons why we think you should indeed square dance.

Say, “Cheese!”

As mentioned earlier, square dancing makes you smile. And smiling makes you feel happier and look younger and more attractive. Here’s a little secret just between us…even if you fake a smile, after a while, you’ll actually start to feel happier.

You’re steppin’.

Square dancing is essentially walking at a steady pace. You can get in about 128 steps a minute with an eight-person dance with music accompaniment. For those of you wearing step counters, that’s about 3,840 steps in 30 minutes!

Burn, baby, burn.

So obviously, if you’re moving you’re burning calories. On average, one can burn between 200-400 calories in just 30 minutes of square dancing.

Howdy, Friend.

A typical square dance involves four couples. Needless to say, you’ll develop friendships with your dancing partners. The Mayo Clinic says that friendships increase happiness, reduce stress and improve overall self-confidence.

Becoming Einstein.

While square dancing, your brain is constantly making decisions…what step to make, when to turn, whom to swing. That constant brain activity actually increases your mental capacity. Simply put, square dancing makes you smarter. But an every-once-in-a-while twirl on the dance floor won’t have the same impact as regular toe tapping.

Maybe it’s time we all gave this thing called square dancing a try. After all, an entire month is devoted to it. So, swing your partner round and round! And if you do take a whirl on the dance floor, make sure to tell us about it – even better, send us pics!

But let’s face it – there are actually some TV doctors that we just can’t get enough of, so we toss the proverbial apple right out the window.

While the professionals at Glass Doctor® are dedicated to fixing your pains, we like to have a little fun in the process too. So, here’s a list of our top five apple-tossing, worthy of binge-watching, favorite TV doctors.

Hawkeye Pierce

M*A*S*H*

Dr. Pierce was drafted into the U.S. Army and was shipped off to serve at the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (M*A*S*H) during the Korean War.

Cliff Huxtable

The Cosby Show

Dr. Huxtable is a married, father of five who runs his obstetrician practice out of his home office.

Doug Ross

ER

Dr. Ross is a dedicated ER pediatrician at County General Hospital who is committed to his patients – no matter the cost.

Greg House

House M.D.

Dr. House is a cantankerous Head of Diagnostic Medicine at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital in New Jersey who is known for his habitual bluntness and insensitivity.

Derek Shepherd

Grey’s Anatomy

Dr. Shepherd is the Chief of Surgery at Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital who may actually be known more for his McDreamy good looks than his medical skills.

We’re curious. Which one of these doctors would be on your speed dial?
