S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is directed by the Commander, Marine Forces Reserve, with the assistance of his staff, from the Marine Forces Reserve Headquarters in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, an IRS recognized 501(c)(3) not-for-profit charity, is the authorized fundraising and support organization for the Toys for Tots Program. The Foundation provides the funding and support needed for successful annual toy collection and distribution campaigns.

Local campaigns are conducted annually in over 700 communities covering all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

Local toy collection campaigns begin in October and last until mid to late December. Toy distribution also takes place mid to late December. Members of the community drop new, unwrapped toys in collection boxes positioned in local businesses. Coordinators pick up these toys and store them in central warehouses where the toys are sorted by age and gender. At Christmas, Coordinators, with the assistance of local social welfare agencies, church groups, and other local community agencies, distribute the toys to the less fortunate children of the community.

While Toys for Tots Coordinators organize, coordinate and manage the campaign, the ultimate success depends on the support of the local community and the generosity of the people who donate toys.

Local business leaders play key roles. They allow Coordinators to locate drop-off/collection boxes in their stores; provide free warehouse space for storing and sorting toys during October, November and December; provide vehicles to collect toys from drop-off sites; sponsor toy raising events; and help Coordinators arrange media exposure for Toys for Tots in the local community.

Glass Doctor of Raleigh participates each year in collecting toys! Use one of our coupons when you donate a toy! Call Glass Doctor of Raleigh! We Fix Your Panes! 919-571-3350

Did you know that that October 3 was World Smile Day? That’s right. There’s an entire day dedicated to showing off your pearly whites. Well, to be perfectly honest, the day was originally created by the creator of the ever-so-popular yellow ‘smiley’ emoji and the intent was to encourage folks to participate in acts of kindness and, of course, to smile!

So, there you go… a holiday dedicated to a smiley kind of day. And think about it…who doesn’t feel good smiling? Admittedly, there may be some times that you have to fake it, but did you know that even if you fake a smile your mood can improve and your stress level can decrease? And get this; there are actual bonafide health benefits to smiling too! But here’s our question to you, why can’t we make it World Smile Every Day? Because, after all, just like Glass Doctor® fixes your panes, a smile can fix your pains!

Are you smiling yet? Just in case you need a little nudging, here are a few of the awesomely, cool side effects of smiling.

Smiling releases endorphins that can be effective for pain management.

Smiling reduces stress, which ultimately helps your heart. Studies have actually shown that folks who smile live longer.

Smiling can help your endurance during physical activity, and we all know that regular physical activity is key to maintaining good health.

Smiling is contagious. Here’s an experiment…go to a park or playground and watch a child smiling and having fun. You’ll soon feel a tug on the corners of your mouth. No doubt, a smile is inevitable.

Smiling makes us more attractive and more approachable. Think about it, how eager are you to approach someone with a grumpy-Gus scowl?

There you go. Don’t hold back. Let your smile take over. And if those fantastical, smile-worthy side effects still aren’t enough to get you grinning from ear-to-ear, here are a couple of videos that’ll get you smiling!

Make it a say-cheese kind of day, every day!

5 Tips for Relaxation: Dealing with Stress

5 Tips for Relaxation: Dealing with Stress

Super User

Thursday, August 14, 2014 - 1:15pm

We’ve all heard the old ad slogan, “Calgon take me away.” It’s almost become cliché as a symbol of the ultimate relaxation. But when you have to walk the dog, feed the kids, make lunches, help with homework, get dressed, drop off the kids, pick up the dry cleaners and make it to work all before 8:00 a.m., that Calgon “take-away” is nothing more than a mere pipe dream.

Dictionary.com defines relax: to make less tense, rigid, or firm; make lax: to relax the muscles.

Hmmmmm. Let’s think about that for a minute. Is that really possible? Is it realistic to think we can actually “make lax” in a world where our serenity is diluted with post-it notes, to-do lists, calendars and alarms?

It’s absolutely possible! And you can start to “make lax” right this very minute because your helpful Glass Doctor professionals have five tips for relaxation that will, with no doubt, put you in a Calgon state-of-mind.

Rub Feet Over a Golf Ball: Studies have shown that a foot massage can promote relaxation. We’re not talking Tiger Woods style golf balls here. Your basic, run-of-the-mill golf balls will do just fine. Take your shoes off, lean your head back, breathe deeply and let the balls do the work.
Foot Massage Benefits from Healthy Living

Listen to Music: Music has a magical way of transforming you to another time and another place. Pop on the ear buds, sit back, close your eyes and follow wherever your mind leads you.
Top 10 Most Relaxing Songs from PsyAmb

Exercise: A good workout reduces the body’s stress hormones and ups the feel good chemicals in your brain. Think about the “runner’s high” that marathon participants experience. Simply put, exercise just makes you feel good. Keep a pair of sneakers in your car so you can go for a quick stroll at lunch or after work.
How Exercise Helps You Relax from InteliHealth by Aetna

Cuddle a Pet: There are a ton of health benefits to having a furry friend. Really, how can you not feel better with a heavy breathing, slobbery licking, tail wagging greeting after a long, hard day at work?
The Therapeutic and Health Benefits of Pets from Helpguide.org

Laugh: Did you know that laughing is a workout? Well, not entirely, but a good ol’ belly-busting laugh can work a lot of muscles. Which in turn, relaxes the muscles to the point that afterwards, you aren’t as tired and you really do end up with more energy.
How Laughter Therapy Can Relax Muscles and Relieve Stress from 3 Fat Chicks

So, there you have it. Our fabulous-five relaxation tips to help you “make lax” and feel better. Let us know if you have another relaxation method. After all, we all need a “take me away” moment every now and then.

5 Tips To Be A Happier You

5 Tips To Be A Happier You

Super User

Thursday, July 31, 2014 - 2:58pm

Here’s the question of the day, are you happy? Do you have a sparkle in your eye, a pep in your step and a child-like giggle in your voice? In the 80s, Bobby McFerrin told us not to worry and to just be happy. Now we have Pharrell who’s well, he’s just happy. But is it really that easy? Abraham Lincoln once said, “Most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be.”

So, maybe it is actually that easy after all. We just have to sit down and decide to be happy. But just in case you need a little guidance, your Glass Doctor® professionals have come up with 5 tips to help you be a happier you.

Fake it until you make it.

If you deliberately act cheerful, guess what? You will start feeling cheerful. And what do cheerful people do? They smile! Turn that frown upside down and put a smile on your face. Try smiling the next time you’re feeling a bit grumpy and see what happens. It’ll get easier each time you do it.

Smile! 5 Reasons It Will Make You Happy from MindBodyGreen

Look on the bright side.

Is your glass half full? Do you look at the world through rose-colored glasses? Do you see the rose among the thorns? You get the idea. Not only are optimistic people happier, they’re also more self confident, more persistent and generally just healthier. Often times people — especially women — are seemingly brainwashed to feeling they need to appear a certain way, dress a certain way, or wear certain types of makeup because the media has subconsciously entered our daily lives. Teenagers and young adults are constantly checking social media accounts, whether it be Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook, to see how much interest their pictures are getting. Although this may seem like everyday normal behavior, it often plays a part in personal insecurities.

Here are 5 ways to help you feel better about yourself:

1. Improve your social circle – hang around with people who are a positive influence and make you feel good about yourself.

2. Try to not let the media brain wash you to think we should all be a size zero. Everyone comes in different shapes and sizes.

3. Exercise stimulates the mind and allows for a more positive outlook

4. Dress for your body type, not to impress people. Dress for yourself!

5. Eat healthy – not only will eating more fruits and veggies help maintain better health, it will also make you feel better about yourself.

We all need to keep in mind that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and what is ideal to some may not appeal to others. The way the media portrays people is often very different than the way we are — and we are just fine!
