CARROLLTON, Tex. – On July 14, 2015, Glass Doctor® of North Texas announced that it successfully designed and installed a freestanding 20 foot tall curtain wall window system for a million dollar house in the Lakewood neighborhood, one of Dallas’ most affluent suburbs. Usually Glass Doctor installs standard windows into the framed openings of the house structure, but in this case, there was no framed opening so Glass Doctor had to build a 20 foot tall structural window.

Mitch Lambert, Glass Doctor Account Manager, said, “This was a great opportunity for Glass Doctor of North Texas to showcase what sets us apart from our competitors.” And Kelly Reynolds, Owner of Keen Homes, said “[We chose Glass Doctor because of] their reputation, quality, and competitive price.”

This is the simplest method of cleaning your windows. You only need five basic tools: a bucket of water, a sponge, a detergent, a squeegee, and a chamois/dry cloth.

Fill your bucket with warm water and add a small amount of a detergent (such as Windex)

Now soak your sponge and clean your window frames starting from the top
Soak your sponge in the bucket of soap water and start cleaning your windows either by:
1. Starting on the upper-left side of the windows and make an S-shape downwards until you reach the bottom corner of the window
2. Starting on the upper-left corner and drag the sponge straight down

Use your squeegee and start cleaning your windows starting from the top going straight down. Leave about an inch of room at the top so you can start each stroke from a dry area.
1. Use your chamois/cloth to dry any excess water after each stroke. If not, you will have visible white lines on your windows

Austin, TX - Texas State Capitol Building
Did you know that the Texas State Capitol Building has 924 windows? That’s a whole lot of windows! The Texas Capitol is spectacular on its own, but it sits amidst 22 acres of magnificently maintained lawn and historical monuments.

Dallas, TX - Dallas County Admin Building
Originally constructed in 1901 and known as the Texas School Book Depository, this building’s claim to fame came in November 1963 when Lee Harvey Oswald assassinated President John F. Not to be too intense, but tempered glass can really be the difference between life or death in extreme circumstances.

Accidents happen – a neighbor hits a baseball through the kitchen window, the movers walk through the glass front door, the lawn mower throws the dog’s bone through the sliding glass. In the movies, it’s funny or even heroic when something or someone smashes through glass. But in real life, these events can be catastrophic.

The difference between an annoying inconvenience and a life-threatening injury lies mainly with the type of glass involved. Is the glass standard or is it tempered?

Larry Patterson of Glass Doctor^® of Dallas Metroplex explains, “Not to be too intense, but tempered glass can really be the difference between life or death in extreme circumstances.”

Glass Doctor: What exactly is tempered glass?

Larry Patterson: Tempered glass is glass that has been heated to around 1100 degrees in a tempering furnace and then quickly cooled with room temperature air. Think of the old pictures of the blacksmith beating on heated steel and then dipping it in cold water. This tempering process strengthens the outer layer of the glass so that it can withstand impact without breaking.

Glass Doctor: Why is providing tempered glass important to consumers?

Larry Patterson: When tempered glass does break, it breaks into very small pieces that significantly reduce the chance of injury to people, animals and property. It’s almost like the glass blows up or explodes.

Glass Doctor: What are the guidelines for tempered glass?

Larry Patterson: When glass is tempered properly it meets Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and ANSI (American National Standards Institute) codes for safety glazing. Safety glazing is supposed to be used in doors, adjacent to doors and in glazing applications that could be subject to human impact.

Glass Doctor: Can tempered glass really make that big of a difference?

Larry Patterson: Absolutely. When I was eight years old, I ran into a non-tempered, plate glass sliding door. The impact caused the door to shatter into long shards that cut my legs up pretty badly. I ended up with more than 100 stitches and had a cut that was within half an inch of my femoral artery. I could have died. If the glass had been tempered I probably would have bounced off of it and walked away with nothing more than a bruised ego.

Glass Doctor: Do you have any tips or tidbits to share?

Larry Patterson: If your home was built before 1980, make sure that all doors and windows that are subject to human impact have a small etched logo in the corner indicating that it is safety glass. Even with newer homes, there are situations where the glass is actually not safety glass but still meets code. In many situations, a clear film can be applied very cost effectively that makes the glass safe.

Now just imagine the fabulous culinary delights you could create if you had access to fresh herbs 24/7. With your very own window garden you can have fresh herbs whenever your taste buds desire.

So, as you embark on your spring-cleaning rituals, take a look at your pantry. Maybe it’s time to clean out the dried herbs and start your own window garden. Believe it or not, it’s actually pretty easy to do.

You’ll need…
• a sunny windowsill. A window facing south or southwest is ideal. Make sure the window gets about 6 hours of good sunlight a day for best results.

• your favorite herbs. We’ve come up with a group that we call the fantastic four because these herbs are super fragrant and they work well with an indoor garden setup.

Basil - Bruschetta with Tomatoes & Basil
Dill – Cucumber Feta Cheese Bites
Rosemary – Easy Roasted Mushrooms with Rosemary & Garlic
Thyme – Chicken with Sun-Dried Tomato Cream Sauce

• a container 6-12 inches deep with drainage holes. Make sure to put a saucer under the container to catch the drainage so you don’t ruin the windowsill.

• soilless potting mix. Avoid garden soil because it can be too heavy to drain and could also have soil diseases.

You’ll want to follow the specific seeding and planting directions for each herb, but this will certainly get you started in the right direction. You’ll have fabulous fresh herbs and pretty window decorations in no time.

As a homeowner, regular household maintenance is crucial in the prevention in costly repair bills. Although we enjoy all of nature’s four seasons, we also need to remember that constant weather changes have an impact on our home, especially our windows. A lot of homeowners are unaware that our windows are what help maintain temperate levels in our home. That’s why it’s recommended to inspect your windows regularly to see whether they need to be replaced or repaired.

Routine inspection of your IGU’s (Insulated Glass Units) is very important. One of the most obvious things to monitor on your IGU is the amount of condensation around the windowsills. Condensation will appear as excessive beads of sweat around the windows. Although condensation is rather normal in times of seasonal change, be aware that you should not have puddles around your windowsills.

One of the main reasons IGUs have issues is because the caulking around the windows is not installed correctly. Another reason for an IGU to fail would be due to “Solar Pumping”. Solar pumping is caused from the windows contracting at night, which allows air to enter. The constant contraction and expansion weakens seals around the windows, which allows moisture to enter and causes your IGU to fail.
