How to Guarantee Safe Windshield Installation

How to Guarantee Safe Windshield Installation

Vanessa Jenkins

Monday, January 25, 2016 - 1:29pm

No matter the damage your windshield has suffered, it is critical to find a company qualified to repair your vehicle’s make and model.

Whether you choose our trained glass specialists or not, we always recommend you select a company that is familiar with the standards set by the Auto Glass Safety Council™ (AGSC).

The AGSC is a non-profit organization that promotes standards for safe windshield replacement. In order to join the AGSC, members must go through a strict registration process. Glass Doctor of Raleigh is audited by this organization to make sure we are following and complying with all AGSC safety rules and regulations. We are a proud member of the AGSC and comply with all industry standards.

Unfortunately, many windshields are improperly installed by company's not trained in proper windshield care. Poor windshield installation causes safety issues that can be life threatening during an auto accident. When the front air bags (We need to fact check, is it just the passenger or is it driver and passenger?)deploy, in many vehicles, it hits the windshield then bounces back to the passenger. (Began two sentences in a row with the same phrasing)Windshields installed with the wrong adhesives or poorly fitted glass will pop out of place, causing the airbag to not perform as designed. This puts the occupants of the vehicle at high risk.

Entrust the Glass Doctor of Raleigh team with your windshield installation. We will make sure your glass is installed correctly to keep your family safe, call us now for premium serve! We fix your panes!®

Five Reasons to Replace Your Home's Windows

Five Reasons to Replace Your Home's Windows

Tori Jackson

Thursday, October 8, 2015 - 9:32am

Upgrading your windows is an investment that can bring a wide range of benefits to your Barrie home. If your windows are damaged, drafty or simply outdated, replacing them with modern double pane windows will make you wonder how you lived with your old panes for so long.

1. Add Up the Energy Savings

Installing new window panes is a tremendous way to trim dollars off your energy bills. By greatly reducing the heat transfer that takes place in old single pane windows, high-efficiency double pane windows make it much easier to heat and cool your home. That means less reliance on your HVAC system and considerably smaller heating and cooling bills.

2. Invest In Comfort

Older windows typically give you 15 years of reliable service. After 15 years, you start to see problems, one of the most noticeable is that it becomes harder and harder to maintain a consistent temperature in your home. Upgrading to double pane windows helps to keep the cold out in winter, and seal conditioned air inside during summer, ensuring comfort year-round.

3. Keep Your Home Secure

Windows with cracked glass, broken seals and damaged locks have a way of inviting unwanted guests. Keep pests and burglars both at bay by restoring your windows. In some cases, window glass repair is enough to re-establish your home's security. Other times, replacement is necessary. Be sure to ask our team about window glass replacement, the specialists at Glass Doctor® of Barrie can often replace only the glass, allowing you to keep your existing window frames.

4. Bump Up Your Curb Appeal

Whether you're trying to sell your house or just want it to look its best for your own aesthetic enjoyment, you know that worn-out or mismatched windows won't win your home any beauty contests. Replacing old windows is one of the easiest and most effective ways to improve your home's allure.

5. Enjoy Peace and Quiet

It's a simple fact that old windows don't do a very good job when it comes to blocking out noise pollution – a fact you know all too well if you live near a busy roadway or airport. Updating your windows significantly reduces noise pollution, allowing you to bask in peace and quiet no matter where you live.

Schedule an appointment with Glass Doctor of Barrie for double pane window repair, replacement and upgrades. We fix your panes!®

This is the simplest method of cleaning your windows. You only need five basic tools: a bucket of water, a sponge, a detergent, a squeegee, and a chamois/dry cloth.

Fill your bucket with warm water and add a small amount of a detergent (such as Windex)

Now soak your sponge and clean your window frames starting from the top

Soak your sponge in the bucket of soap water and start cleaning your windows either by:

Starting on the upper-left side of the windows and make an S-shape downwards until you reach the bottom corner of the window

Starting on the upper-left corner and drag the sponge straight down

Use your squeegee and start cleaning your windows starting from the top going straight down. Leave about an inch of room at the top so you can start each stroke from a dry area.

Use your chamois/cloth to dry any excess water after each stroke. If not, you will have visible white lines on your windows

So, we’ve decided to take a road trip up Interstate 35. And while we’re at it, we’re going to make a few pit stops and check out some of the famous windows along the way. Hop on in and come along for the ride. We’re hitting the road.

Austin, TX - Texas State Capitol Building
Did you know that the Texas State Capitol Building has 924 windows? That’s a whole lot of windows! The Texas Capitol is spectacular on its own, but it sits amidst 22 acres of magnificently maintained lawn and historical monuments.

Dallas, TX - Dallas County Admin Building
Originally constructed in 1901 and known as the Texas School Book Depository, this building’s claim to fame came in November 1963 when Lee Harvey Oswald assassinated President John F. Kennedy out of a sixth floor window. The building has since been acquired by Dallas County. The Sixth Floor Museum opened in 1989 as a historical exhibit on President Kennedy.

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma - Devon Energy Center
This 50 story, 3-sided glass tower stands at 844 feet and holds the title as the tallest building in Oklahoma. On most Thursdays and Saturdays, you can enjoy a 90-minute tour that includes an elevator ride to the top of the tower.

Kansas City, Missouri - Union Station
The 100-year-old Union Station has been referred to as an architectural masterpiece. Magnificent windows, a 95-foot ceiling and 3,500-pound chandeliers draw tourists from all over.

Des Moines, Iowa - Valley Junction
Valley Junction is home to more than 150 specialty shops, restaurants and art galleries. It’s the perfect place to get out of the car, stretch your legs and check out the culture with some window shopping.

Saint Paul, Minnesota - Cathedral of Saint Paul
With breathtaking stained-glass windows, the Cathedral is recognized as both a historical landmark and a center of spiritual worship.

There you have it…a road trip of a lifetime. From Austin, Texas to Saint Paul, Minnesota - 1,177 miles straight up I35. We would love to hear about your favorite road trip.

Operating since 2003

http://glassdoctor.com/dallas

Not to be too intense, but tempered glass can really be the difference between life or death in extreme circumstances.

Accidents happen – a neighbor hits a baseball through the kitchen window, the movers walk through the glass front door, the lawn mower throws the dog’s bone through the sliding glass. In the movies, it’s funny or even heroic when something or someone smashes through glass. But in real life, these events can be catastrophic.

The difference between an annoying inconvenience and a life-threatening injury lies mainly with the type of glass involved. Is the glass standard or is it tempered?

Larry Patterson of Glass Doctor® of Dallas Metroplex explains, “Not to be too intense, but tempered glass can really be the difference between life or death in extreme circumstances.”

Glass Doctor: What exactly is tempered glass?

Larry Patterson: Tempered glass is glass that has been heated to around 1100 degrees in a tempering furnace and then quickly cooled with room temperature air. Think of the old pictures of the blacksmith beating on heated steel and then dipping it in cold water. This tempering process strengthens the outer layer of the glass so that it can withstand impact without breaking.

Glass Doctor: Why is providing tempered glass important to consumers?

Larry Patterson: When tempered glass does break, it breaks into very small pieces that significantly reduce the chance of injury to people, animals and property. It’s almost like the glass blows up or explodes.

Glass Doctor: What are the guidelines for tempered glass?

Larry Patterson: When glass is tempered properly it meets Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and ANSI (American National Standards Institute) codes for safety glazing. Safety glazing is supposed to be used in doors, adjacent to doors and in glazing applications that could be subject to human impact.

Glass Doctor: Can tempered glass really make that big of a difference?

Larry Patterson: Absolutely. When I was eight years old, I ran into a non-tempered, plate glass sliding door. The impact caused the door to shatter into long shards that cut my legs up pretty badly. I ended up with more than 100 stitches and had a cut that was within half an inch of my femoral artery. I could have died. If the glass had been tempered I probably would have bounced off of it and walked away with nothing more than a bruised ego.

Glass Doctor: Do you have any tips or tidbits to share?

Larry Patterson: If your home was built before 1980, make sure that all doors and windows that are subject to human impact have a small etched logo in the corner indicating that it is safety glass. Even with newer homes, there are situations where the glass is actually not safety glass but still meets code. In many situations, a clear film can be applied very cost effectively that makes the glass safe.

Call the Glass Doctor…we fix your panes.

Spring Window Gardens

Spring Window Gardens

Judy Freeman

Monday, March 30, 2015 - 11:01am

There’s just something about fresh herbs that’s almost indescribable. Of course, dried herbs are fine in a pinch, but nothing beats fresh. Simply chopping fresh herbs introduces the most unbelievable fragrance that can overtake an entire kitchen. And the flavor… When you cook with fresh herbs, every single bite has a burst of flavor so incredible it leaves you speechless.

Now just imagine the fabulous culinary delights you could create if you had access to fresh herbs 24/7. With your very own window garden you can have fresh herbs whenever your taste buds desire.

So, as you embark on your spring-cleaning rituals, take a look at your pantry. Maybe it’s time to clean out the dried herbs and start your own window garden. Believe it or not, it’s actually pretty easy to do.

Your Glass Doctor® specialist has made a list of 4 things you’ll need to create your very own spring window garden.

You’ll need…
• a sunny windowsill. A window facing south or southwest is ideal. Make sure the window gets about 6 hours of good sunlight a day for best results.

• your favorite herbs. We’ve come up with a group that we call the fantastic four because these herbs are super fragrant and they work well with an indoor garden setup.

Basil - Bruschetta with Tomatoes & Basil
Although we enjoy all of nature’s four seasons, we also need to remember that constant weather changes have an impact on our home, especially our windows. A lot of homeowners are unaware that our windows are what help maintain temperate levels in our home. That’s why it’s recommended to inspect your windows regularly to see whether they need to be replaced or repaired.

Routine inspection of your IGU’s (Insulated Glass Units) is very important. One of the most obvious things to monitor on your IGU is the amount of condensation around the windowsills. Condensation will appear as excessive beads of sweat around the windows. Although condensation is rather normal in times of seasonal change, be aware that you should not have puddles around your windowsills.

One of the main reasons IGUs have issues is because the caulking around the windows is not installed correctly. Another reason for an IGU to fail would be due to “Solar Pumping”. Solar pumping is caused from the windows contracting at night, which allows air to enter. The constant contraction and expansion weakens seals around the windows, which allows moisture to enter and causes your IGU to fail.

For more information, contact your local Glass Doctor® who will be happy to assess your window needs.
